John ran the Chicago Marathon today - his 8th marathon. If you've never been to a marathon, you really ought to go. There is nothing more inspirational than seeing ordinary people do an extraordinary feat and extraordinary people do things you never thought were possible. People really run 26.2 miles. Some people run it in just 2 hours and 5 seconds! Some run on prosthetics. Others power a special "wheeler" with just their arms at incredible speeds. Today I saw a man with one leg who had "crutched" his way through the whole marathon. That's amazing determination!Being a spectator is a lot of fun. There's an energy among the spectators as they wait for their person to come by but cheer on all the others as they wait. Cowbells ring, people shouting, clapping, rooting everyone on. "You can do it!" "Just 1 mile to go!" Easy for us to say!
All the training. The discipline. The mental game. It all comes down to today. To 26.2 miles. I stand amazed every time that people do this. Every one of them is a different story.
Here's to you John - you amaze me and I am so proud of you. You inspire me.
